CHAPTER TWELVE

BLISS

Saturday 9:00 a.m.

Bliss checked the table outside the spa area. Damn, the necklace was still in place. Well, it wasn’t over yet, and she’d earned this down time. She sent off a text to Tori and Alysha and pushed all thoughts of her lost earrings from her mind.

She shed her clothes in the changing room of Rosie’s Retreat. Strange name, sounded like a nudist colony. A delicate scent of lavender wafted up from the luxurious white spa robe she slipped into. A little different from the bathrobe in her room, this was meant for relaxing, not drying off. And soft slippers to match. This was more like it. Almost as good as a hug and being in Neil’s arms. Her body warmed, and not just from the bathrobe.

The desk attendant asked her to wait after changing, and promised she’d be along in a few moments to settle her in the treatment room. Bliss wondered why the young girl wouldn’t make eye contact with her, especially after she mumbled something about being short staffed. “But don’t worry, ma’am. You’ll still have the full treatments you’ve paid for.”

Ma’am? She’d let it go because a relaxed mood was to be nurtured at any cost. Her ears detected gentle guitar chords. Good, not Christmas music. She’d heard enough in the past 24 hours to last until next Christmas! Serenity now – she reminded herself. She leaned her head back and closed her eyes.

“Ms. Cornwall? Sorry, but can you come this way please?”

Bliss blinked her eyes to focus, stood, and followed the nervous attendant. The girl needed to develop some confidence. Probably still in high school and doing this part time to make money for Christmas.

They moved silently down the hall to an open door. This was more like it! Subdued lighting and a table draped in white linens beckoned her. Maybe now she could put that disastrous trip on a closed highway behind her. She wanted her mind to float free. No thoughts of thieves, or Neil’s muscular body – damn this wasn’t working yet!

“I’ll leave you to disrobe and get beneath the covers. Your estishun will be here shortly.”

“Mmmm... it’s pronounced eh-stuh-ti-shn. Just for next time. And thanks.” The girl didn’t move, and Bliss asked. “Is there something else?”

“Oh, yes. Right. Please relax and enjoy.” She handed Bliss an eye mask.

Moments later, Bliss was on the verge of surrendering to sleep when she heard a discreet tap at the door as it was opened. No greeting. So far so good. Last thing she wanted was a chatty esthetician. She heard indistinct sounds of creams being applied to a pair of hands.

Expert fingers began deep cleaning and moisturising her face. She kept her eyes closed as the mask was gently removed. This was heaven! Her thoughts drifted like smoke as the treatment continued. An unexpected snort startled her. She’d fallen asleep. Wait, was that a giggle?

Uncool. She’d been told that having a client go to sleep was actually a compliment to the therapist or masseuse.
